KuIS, ever since its establishment, together with its networks and partners from all over Indonesia, has been actively playing a role in the policy advocacy activities and social mobilization in the health sector in order to raise the government’s commitments and the community’s awareness and knowledge about living a healthy lifestyle. |
|
|
This year the Coalition for Healthy Indonesia, also known as KuIS, will celebrate its eight-year voyage. Looking back, KuIS struggles are the reflections of how KuIS has been contributing to Indonesia’s health development. Tini Hadad, KuIS executive board member, said that KuIS was born from the awareness of the big challenges and how massive the health issues Indonesia faces, which are shown by the existence of big gaps amongst the economic, education and resources issues. These issues are related to the efforts in order to realize the vision of a Healthy Indonesia.

Nurhanita: For Eight Years, We Learn

Eight years is a relatively short time for a big idea, which is to contribute in constructing a healthy Indonesia. Yet, it is quite a long time for us to learn. |

Anti-Tobacco Activists: Movements in the Midst of the Government’s Uncertainty
In approaching the World Anti Tobacco Day (WATD), the National Commission for Controlling the Smoking Problem (Komnas PPM) will initiate an effort to collect 40.000 school students’ signatures. The initiation, which involves the Teacher Union of the Republic of Indonesia as well as junior high school, high school and vocational school students, shows that the youth demand that the government fulfill its responsibility to protect the youth from the tobacco industries’ rapid expansion. The demand and the signatures collected will be symbolically handed to Indonesia’s First Lady, Ani Bambang Yudhoyono, on the commemoration of the World Anti Tobacco Day 2008. |

Women’s Health: Between Rights and Political Willingness
March 8 is the day when the world commemorates the world women day, yet many women still feel that they have not obtained their rights in the areas of economics, politics, and health. While in the revised 1945 law, which was justified in the year 2000, article 28H states that “…every citizen has the right to the health service.” The main reason this article was put in the law is so that every individual is guaranteed fundamental health rights as stated in the human rights declaration (health is a fundamental human right). Even the revised draft of the Health Law, which has been discussed in the parliament, states that health is everyone’s right. |
